Melbourne rider Adam Dyson is studying film and creates a bunch of edits so we thought we would hit him up to talk about making web videos…
What was the first web video you made?
The first web edit I made was of a little backyard jam we had about 2 years ago in a mates backyard, I just got my first half decent camera and was keen to make something up. So one of my mates had a mini ramp already in his backyard do we go a heap of packing creates and old bits of wood added a few jib stuff to it and made a little edit out of the footage. That was a real fun day, a great first experience with filming BMX.
Best thing about making web videos compared to a DVD?
The best thing about web edits is it’s easy, you don’t have to try and sell anything so heaps of people can see your work, it definitely the best way to get some exposure.
Worst thing about making web videos compared to a DVD?
The worst thing about web edits is you can’t create the hype as you can with DVDs. This isn’t always important but people get a little more excited for DVD because as a rule there’s better filming and riding.
With a countless amount of web videos coming out each day from all over the world, Do you stress much about finding a song that hasn’t been used before?
When it comes to Music I try as hard as I can to find un-used music, there tons of great music out there but overall music is music so I don’t thing it matter all that much if you use the same songs as another edit as long as it’s not being uploaded on the same day.
Do you prefer Vimeo or Youtube and why?
I prefer using Vimeo over Youtube, mainly because it’s a little more professional and had a much better looking player. But to be honest I don’t like hating on either because in the end the both do the same thing.
Who out there motivates you to create web videos?
As you may know man I’m studying film production so that motivates me a fair bit, you need to always be filming. Also watching other edits and big budget feature film give me ideas of what I could try with the camera. I just like trying new thing with the camera, so that final result always motivates me too.
Do you feel some people rush web videos? Do you believe you should take as much time working on an edit as you would as if it was for a DVD section?
I don’t think there’s a rule for how long a edit should take, I think it’s more to do with the effort you want to put in. If you want to spend a year doing a DVD part or even a web edit getting all banging tricks that awesome but if you want to do a quick day edit then that’s sick to. Weather you be a rider or a filmmaker the Internet is so good for getting yourself out there so that’s a great place to start.
What has been your favourite web video you have created and why?
My favourite edits I’ve produced is the Nick Harris Welcome to Montage edit and the new Adam Hough edit. Both edits were done over a month or two and love riding and filming with both of those guys.
Any suggestions for people starting to get into making web videos?
Make edits because you want to, and have fun. Don’t try and make money off it, because more than likely you won’t. But If you make a few bucks then good job but don’t make that your focus.
Are you working on any edits at the moment?
Oh Gees the list in kind of big, I just finished an edit for myself and another official welcome to Montage edit. Also have a DVD in the works for release early next year. I try and work on about 3 edits at the one time, just to keep stuff moving.
