Rhys Yeomans was good enough to write an in-depth review on the Troy Charlesworth masterpiece “That’s what’s up” produced by 2020. Hit the read more button below to check it out…
Today we are reviewing Troy’s second 2020 DVD, Thats Whats Up.
The first positive we need to touch on is distribution of this DVD. Being able to download it direct from the 2020 website for a fiver is the best. It was available a couple days after it premiered and for those that don’t want a physical copy, or live out in the boonies without a newsagent or bmx store, this is the best way for everyone to see it without giving it away on the internet.
I have spoken previous about watching something on a TV with your friends, but with today’s modern technologies, everyone can connect their computers to their TVs anyway and enjoy the true cinematic experience, so the requirement for a physical disc is almost null and void. You can still buy it for a tenner from bmx stores and newsagents. I know Little Black Bike has it already, so I assume everyone else does by now.
Onto the main event!
The opening montage introduces us to the guys who have full parts in the dvd via a combination of tricks, crashes and funnies. The guys with parts are all from Queensland, which makes sense considering where Biggie lives. That isn’t to say there aren’t more people featured, these are just the guys with full parts, so deserve a bit more shine time because they gathered up the most footage for us to enjoy.
Jerry Vandervalk has the first part, which considering all the footage we’ve seen from him in Stu’s DVD and the leftovers from Stu’s DVD, that is pretty amazing!! I love Jerry’s lazy looking tall man style, which is complemented quite well with the addition of a freecoaster for a fair portion of his section. The 180 fake manual full cab line is a perfect example of this. I really liked that. The wheels over ice near the end is also worth noting. As expected, this is a great opening part to a video full of bangers and technical wizardry.
As well as full parts from guys featured in the opening montage, there is a big split mix sections featuring pretty much every sponsored guy in Australia, from the most obscure to the big names. I didn’t count, but I’m sure there are 50 guys featured in the mix sections. It is like the United Nations of Australian BMX. If you’ve read my previous reviews, you’ll know the guys I like seeing footage of, but I’ll special mention Liam Thomas for that nosebonk feeble. No one else is doing those!
Actually, I’ll also mention Danger as well. He looks so good on a bike, even without a chain!! We need more Danger clips!!
There is even a park and dirt montage for you park dogs that ride past my house with squeaky brakes on the way to Camberwell skatepark. Shout out to my great friend David Dillewaard for his superb display of bmxing.
Nick Kajewski is up with the next part. Watch Biggie’s interview on the FP site if you want to know how to pronounce Nick’s surname. Nick has the cover of FP issue 23 with an epic barspin down a set in Toowoomba.
The line that sums up this part is the double peg down the big set, then barspin down the second directly after. Good trick selection, well executed with speed; that is how I’d describe Nick’s great riding. There was one line at the start that looked a bit awkward and a bit slow, but the rest of it was perfect Nick K. I’m glad to finally see footage of the kinker he double pegged at Etihad also! Well done Nick K, the baby girls of Brisbane will be impressed.
The last part from Vocko is unbelievable. So much dead man. I don’t think he lands backwards once, but who would want to from those heights?! Just go and watch it, then think about riding off your roof because Vocko probably already has. You’re probably thinking this sentence or two isn’t doing Vocko any justice, but I REALLY feel like you need to watch this to comprehend how much work he has put into it. I’m a huge fan, and always have been of this great person!!
Thats Whats Up is a great DVD, well filmed and edited by Troy Charlesworth. The colours are superb, there is enough variety in the music to please most and the riding is spectacular. A+.
And if you buy the physical DVD, you get a couple extra bonus sections. If you’re feeling like splashing the cash, that could be your option!
We also dropped an interview with Troy a couple weeks back where he talks all about the filming process…
