VIMEO FEATURE // BRET TRIGG VISUAL

This is a new feature we are banging out for the site where we feature an Australian film makers Vimeo page and hit them with a bit of a Q&A. First up is Bret Trigg, enjoy…

Out of all your videos on the vimeo page what are your 3 favourites and tell us why?
Choosing 3 of my favourite videos wasn’t easy. But here are my 3 favourites.

Local Knowledge – A BMX Documentary

Local Knowledge was awesome to make, I was free to make it how ever i wanted to. I’d never worked on a documentary before and it was a really good learning curve for myself. I’m so pumped on the final product, it was received really well from the local council and all over the internet. Which really made it worth it.

The Hunt – Kyle Baldock

Whilst I was on my first ever trip to america I had the opportunity to be apart of The Hunt BMX DVD competition. I was partnered up with Kyle Baldock. Kyle and I had only filmed 2-3 times before this back in Australia, so I was really looking forward to see what we could put together in Greenville. Kyles riding was on another level and being able to replicate that into a DVD section was a great honour. It was a great exposure boost for both Kyle and I.
On the premiere night of the DVD Kyle was awarded Best Trick for his trick 360 down whip to super seat grab. We also placed 5th in the competition and received a spot on the DVD.

One Day At Rampfest With Andrew ‘Mini’ Ahumada

This video sure isn’t the best example of my work. But it’s definitely a memorable video to me. I remember distinctly the day Mini came up to me and asked if i wanted to shoot a video, i straight away said yes. One day i travelled up to Rampfest on the train from Warrnambool to film with him. I still think to this day the day we shot this video was the hottest it’s ever been in Rampfest. It was ridiculous. But Mini still pumped out the biggest tricks all for a video. I still constantly go back and watch this and still think of how good the riding is in it. But we always joke at how badly it was filmed haha. I think this is where my career as a filmer really started. Now i can cal Andrew one of my best mates and we are now living in a house together with Matt Whyatt.

Hardest web video to film/edit?
I think the hardest web video to edit would have been the Kyle Baldock – The Hunt BMX teaser. I had never made a trailer or a teaser for any sort of video. I had to cut a full section into a small 23second teaser. It was a struggle cause i didn’t know what to take out what to keep and how to do it all. But i got there finally.

Most enjoyable web video to film/edit?
There is a long list of my most enjoyable to film. My most recent edit with Kyle Baldock would be my most enjoyable to film. I was able to spend a good 3 months filming with Kyle on it. In Melbourne for a week twice and then i spent a week in Queensland at his place. Kyles such a good person to film with, not does he do the biggest and gnarliest tricks, he understands filming and is always a joke to be around! I worked real hard on the filming and editing for this video and i was stoked on the finished product.

Anything about Vimeo you wish was different? Any improvement you would like to see?
I think Vimeo is sweet! Heaps of cool little features that YouTube doesn’t have yet. Vimeo seems a lot more professional. I can’t really think of anything they could improve but I’m sure plenty of other people could think of reasons ha.

Do you prefer web edits or DVD with full sections?
Personally I’d love the opportunity to film a DVD. I’ve talked with lots of riders about doing one but it’s super time consuming. If i was offered the job to film a DVD i’d jump on board straight away. But I don’t really have a preference, i just seem to do a lot more web based video content. But both have a place in BMX and i still think DVDs need to be a big part of BMX. I grew up watching all the Road Fools, Mega Tours and Props Issues. Thats where my love for BMX started, watching comps like Backyard Jam, Metro Jam on the Props videos.

What’s your opinion on companies dropping full length video online now (like the new Animal QSS#3, 90 East, The Manna Machine etc)?
I think it’s cool, but i think a DVD version should always be released. It really depends on how the company wants to show their brand. Like a lot of companies are shooting SD and then some are going crazy HD style. So i think posting full length videos online fit certain brands and some don’t. Either way things are changing and the internet is a growing business. But it can go either way. It could be bad posting them online but at the same time could be great exposure. Just depends on which route that brand / company wants to go down.

Any web videos dropping soon?
I do have a few videos about to drop and also to be finished filming. Heres a little list.
-Andrew Ahumada Vital BMX Power Hour
-Whyatt Vs Ahumada – Game of FIST. (BIKE)
-Matt Sherriff Enough Threads Video
-Matt Whyatt DC Shoes
-Andrew Ahumada TotalBMX Video
I’ve also been working on a lot of motocross videos. So i’ve been out filming moto stuff lately which has been awesome and fun do be working on a variety of projects!
