After seeing some of Kyle’s work recently I knew we had to see more so I hit him up to pick out some of his favourites and this is what came of it. Really into Kyle’s style so I hope you guys are as well…
Jack Birtles, hang five and hop bar, Valley Brisbane.
This building was becoming rather synonymous between Brisbane hardcore bands, being used regularly for promo shots. We decided to go try and shoot something there before it was to be redeveloped, buildings don’t tend to remain abandoned in Brisbane these days. So I ran the tilt shift again, did some fancy editing and came up with this.
Jack birtles, table air, some spillway Brisbane.
I’ll try and not make this a Jack Birtles feature haha. We actually ventured out here with Tom Stretton to film some shit inside the spillway, we quickly noticed this slightly banked wall with an amazing run in, and hatched a plan to dig up a little transition at the bottom, I promptly got 2 flats and decided to start shooting. This was actually my first day out shooting on my new 50mm F1.2, so to get this made me fall in love with that lens.
Daniel Watson, Hop Bar, Osaka Japan.
I might be wrong but I believe this photo came about on our second day in Osaka Japan; it was shot from the roof top of our building, around about 5 stories up. The first time we all set foot on the roof top, all the boys were talking about how good it would be for chilling, drinking and using as a shooting range for our BB gun, all I could think about was using my Tilt shift lens to shoot anything. So after a lot of yelling from top to bottom I was able to line this one up. The next day Daniel had a bit of a misfortunate step off and tore his ACL.
Jason Watts, 360 lookback, Ferny Grove Brisbane
This kid is unreal; it would be really hard to take a bad photo of him riding any kind of transition. There isn’t much else to say. I shot this on my old Canon 1D mk2N with an 85mm F1.8, which I believe is the absolute best set up when shooting on a budget.
Thomas Dunn. Down whip, Brisbane
This is one of those spots that I have known about for years but just never been able to shoot, so before even arriving that morning I had completely planned how I would shoot it. We roll in and there is a car parked exactly where I wanted to shoot, so I had to re-evaluate, which I am never happy to do, so I got a photo and finished packing my shit up when the car owner returns and leaves, so I unpack and shoot this photo, which is exactly the way I wanted it. It’s fantastic when shit just works out eventually.
Jack Birtles, T-bog, Brisbane
It is just a fantastic feeling to get 2 photos I’m happy with at the same spot in the same morning, especially when 20 minutes prior we were getting ready to bail. And yes he did hit the wall a couple of times.
Road trips, Camping on random beaches, Nothing but good times.
Billy Brooks, Spider climb, Sydney
This straight dude has some neck level skills when climbing walls, this was just one of those “I guess I’ll sit here and see what I can shoot”, and I am completely stoked at the results. Natural light is the best light.
Jeremy Carol, Flair, my house Brisbane
“Fuck it, let’s buy beer, drag the ramp into the street and ride it”. You might recognise this ramp as the “BACKEY KUNT” ramp from the last filthy drains challenge. Being that this was at my house I had full access to the stupid amount of camera shit I own plus the use of a friend’s studio lighting set up.
Jack Birtles, Foot plant, Sydney
Just a night out sightseeing around Sydney with Davier Croen, I recognised this car from an amazing skating photo, so Jack foot planted it. The magician’s secret to this photo is a long exposure and setting off the second flash manually. Was a complete experiment, had no idea it would turn out like this. SICK BRAG.
Keelan Troy, Lookback, Kuraby Brisbane.
I have been riding with Keelan from the first day I picked up a BMX. Since then this kid has just become amazingly graceful, and watching him grace the hips of Kuraby is a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon. When the sun flows through the trees surrounding this skate park you sort of forget that you are in one of the shittiest suburbs in Brisbane, then a paint sniffing teen quickly brings you back to reality.
